Mission

Pride, Dignity and Independence. Progressive Directions, Inc. is a charitable organization that provides services to individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities helping them to attain personal success through gaining pride, dignity, and independence.

Background

Progressive Directions, Inc. was chartered by the State of Tennessee as a private not-for-profit organization in 1976. PDI's mission is to serve the people of Middle and West Tennessee, acting in the public interest of each individual by providing mental and physical disablities services to this catchment area. PDI is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors who have full responsibility for directing the agency. The agency is funded by the Tennessee Department of Intellectual and Developmental Disablities, Tennessee Early Intervention System, United Way, Local Governments Corporate and Private Contributions. PDI was founded in 1976 by eight families who had children with developmental disabilities. In 1984, our early intervention program was added, to serve children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. In 1999, PDI closed the last large group home and transformed all PDI served homes to Supported Living houses with no more than three individuals per home. In 1999, a Family Support Grant was awarded to the agency that supports persons with disabilities that live at home and need assistance enabling PDI to serve individuals that weren't funded through DIDD. Just one year later, in 2000, PDI opened an integrated preschool/early intervention program named Kids Depot and five years after that opened an adjacent building to house the offices of our Early Interventionists. In 2006 a 1385 square foot Respite House was built on the Paradise Hill property. This is one of the only dedicated Respite Homes in Middle Tennessee. In the summer of 2007, PDI added Buddy Ball Special Needs Athletic Program to our list of services. Buddy Ball serves individuals of all ages, three and up, and gives them an opportunity to participate in basketball, bowling, cheerleading or baseball. Most recently, in 2017 PDI merged with Impact Centers to serve Hickman, Maury, Marshall, Giles and Lawrence Counties. Today we serve over 1000 individuals annually and employ over 450 staff. We provide services to individuals of all ages who are funded through Tennessee's various Waiver Programs. PDI also is proud to serve individuals of all ages who participate in our Special Needs Athletic Program; Buddy Ball.

Impact

Progressive Directions, Inc. - for 46 years has been providing person-centered services to people with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities. We currently serve over 1000 individuals of all ages annually with approximately 450 staff. PDI supports 80 residents in 43 homes across 12 counties.

Needs

PDI relies heavily on state funding; however, this income does not always provide enough resources to offer adequate support to the individuals we serve. PDI also receives funding from the United Way, local donors and city and county governments. In most instances, PDI provides funding above and beyond what is allotted by the state to each of the homes we serve to allow the individuals we serve enough funds for needed items and to live comfortably.
