Description
Nurses for Newborns is unique in that it is a prevention-based program with a proven track record for reducing infant mortality, child abuse and neglect in Tennessee. Our home visitation program includes a head-to-toe assessment of the baby and screenings for the caregivers. Babies are weighed and screened for growth and development. Caregivers are screened for Every Day Stressors, Depression and healthy life choices (nutrition, alcohol, drug and tobacco use). These assessments identify needed health education such as breast feeding, child safety, domestic violence, dental care, mental health care and positive parenting. Since our services are provided in the family's home, we are able to assess environmental safety issues (safe sleep, exposure to smoking/drugs, fall & injury hazards). NFN's nurses provide resource connections to ensure families are able to have the best care possible for the baby and themselves.

Long-term Success
Nurses for Newborns' goals as an agency are centered around client care. We anticipate providing 1,900 visits to approximately 400 at-risk families in FY23. Through education, support, resource referral and assessments and screenings of the caregiver's physical and mental health, the infant's physical and developmental health, and the home environment's safety, we see the following:
• Increased understanding of immunization expectations
• Increased establishment of and access to infant medical care provider
• Increased understanding of infant health and development
• Increased understanding of appropriate safety practices
• Increased understanding of the impact of caregiver's mental health on child development

All of NFN's goals and objectives point to the same overarching goal to improve the level of health, safety, and wellness within the family so that the infant can grow up in a safe, stable, and nurturing environment, in essence preventing and mitigating ACEs.

Program Success Monitored By
Outcomes are evaluated based on information documented during home visits. Nurses use laptops in the home and collect and enter data into an electronic medical record database while onsite. All standard consents and evaluations are placed in the client's electronic file. Nurses' notes include a review of what was observed, discussed, and taught during visits. Each month the supervisor completes chart reviews, and teams of nurses meet with supervisors and peers to have Case Management Review meetings. Each outcome and objective is tracked through these methods. Our Analytics Department then generates custom reports on given health and learning objectives and compares them against projected goals throughout the year. The outcome related to the caregiver's mental health is evaluated by using the evidence-based tool, the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). NFN nurses administer this survey and enter responses into our proprietary database.

CEO/Executive Director/Board Comments

Nurses for Newborns is a resource to those who have found themselves in unique health situations with their babies. Our clients range from the most fortunate to the least fortunate - from a mother living in poverty with very little social support who experiences an unplanned/unintended pregnancy to the mother with a high paying corporate position who is financially stable and surrounded by family who has a medically fragile infant. Other clients may be in transitional housing with no transportation, therefore creating an access to healthcare issue. NFN is able to reach clients in their environment and assist them with their unique needs. NFN is committed to improving the quality of life for these specially challenged infants, and their caregivers. Agency nurses work to help parents live more fully, to build healthy relationships, and to become successful caregivers for their child. This involves nurses providing instruction on a variety of topics. Our nurses also make sure families have basic infant care items for their child, are providing a safe place to sleep, and no safety threats are present within the home living environment.
