Description
The student curriculum "A Promise for Tomorrow" presents a positive look at how students can help friends who may be depressed or having suicidal thoughts. This curriculum aims to provide information and strategies needed to be a lifesaving influence. The program is designed to be used within a school's current Health and Wellness program for grades 7-12.

It is designed in a two-lesson format for the traditional high school schedule of 50-to-60-minute classes. These can be presented as two separate lessons or back-to-back to accommodate an extended block class of 90 minutes or longer. The curriculum content is delivered digitally with facilitator-led sections to reiterate information and lead discussion.

JFI provides staff awareness and informational programs for educators, youth workers and others who work with youth through organizations. These programs are provided by direct JFI staff presentation, CD or DVD Resources or by JFI's On-Line Virtual Library hosted on JFI's website. Many schools utilize these programs to provide In-Service or Professional Development training resources for certification. This training is required in 21 states because of The Jason Flatt Act.

Description
Our original JFI program is still one of our most popular and important. Creating awareness with parents and communities about the magnitude and impact of youth suicide is the first step in building a successful prevention campaign. The program also helps train individuals to recognize "warning signs" that four out of five young people show before a suicide attempt. The program stresses the need to put together an action plan before it is needed in order to react timely and correctly should a suicidal situation arise. Previously, this program was only available by JFI staff presentation. It is now available in a "Facilitator's Packet" so that people inside or outside the mental health arena can present a quality and professional presentation on youth suicide prevention. Recently this program has been added to our website for parents.

CEO/Executive Director/Board Comments

Our major challenges lie in two areas: 1. Success: JFI began in 1997 and has grown to become a national leader in youth suicide awareness and prevention. JFI has grown from a kitchen table to a national-regional network of Affiliate offices located in 37 states that serve all fifty States. Success becomes a challenge due to the platform of operations that offers all of our programs and resources at "no-charge" to whom we contract to provide such services. This policy is crucial in sustaining that no individual is denied these life-changing/life-saving resources due to social economic status. Our second challenge lies within the mission itself. Although JFI has grown to be one of the largest organizations in the nation, the national public health problem of youth suicide is so impactive and expanding both to younger youths (10-14 year olds) and young adults (18-24) that despite our current size and resources, we are diminutive to the problem. JFI must not only continue to expand our concentration of programs and services, we must expand programs and develop new tools and resources to meet each new generations needs.
