Description
We provide periodic workshops for all existing Habitat homeowners and current homeowners free of charge. Experts from the community provide information on various topics. We have covered issues such as crime prevention, first-aid and safety, the importance of having a will, easy home repairs, and how to get a High School Equivalency Diploma. We feel by providing these workshops to our homeowners we will empower them to better their lives by making informed decisions. We also provide a Nutrition Class through our partnership with the UT/TSU Cooperative Extension Office in Rutherford County. This program encourages healthy eating habits for a healthy lifestyle and longer, wholesome life. There is a direct correlation between health, ability to work and the financial stability of our homeowners.

Description
Rutherford County Habitat deals with home mortgages on a daily basis and knows the importance of being financially sound and responsible. We offer a free 50-hour Financial Literacy and Homeowner education course that provides approved future homeowners with the knowledge to reduce their debts, create savings, avoid predatory lenders, and creating a family budget. There is a twelve month class for those who could be approved once they overcome any financial barriers. Both classes are led by a certified trainer from Dominion Financial Management, Inc. to conduct the classes. These classes are mandatory for any families who have been or will be accepted into the Habitat program and have been greatly successful for over fifteen years. We have seen an increase in the number of families who are completely out of debt once they have completed the programs.

Description
The census reports a total of 298,612 people living in Rutherford County with 11.1% living in poverty. Housing units among the poor are, generally, in the worst physical condition. There are many owner-occupied homes that need repairs, but the homeowners do not have the financial means or the expertise to make them. In efforts to assist these low-income homeowners, Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) developed a program called Neighborhood Revitalization. This is a home repair program that allows local Habitat affiliates the opportunity to provide general home maintenance and repairs to these struggling homeowners. Under the guidance of HFHI, each affiliate is allowed to modify the NR program to accommodate the needs in their community. The intended result of this program is to broaden Habitat's impact in the community by allowing more homeowners the opportunity to reclaim a sense of pride in their own home while revitalizing the entire neighborhood.

Description
Our premier program is building simple, decent homes for our neighbors in need. We work to combine the efforts of corporate sponsors, individual donors and a core of volunteers to complete the construction of a new home within approximately ten weeks. The home is constructed for a family who has completed the application, education and sweat equity portions of our program. Our families are selected based on credit worthiness, a need for housing, willingness to partner and work sweat equity hours toward the homes that we are building. Habitat partner families make mortgage payments like every other mortgage loan, but they are made affordable because they have zero interest. Many of our homeowners are first generation homeowners. Our homes meet energy star certification and use many green building techniques. The result is that our homes are also more affordable in that we reduce energy/utility costs for our homeowners by as much as 40%.

CEO/Executive Director/Board Comments

Our greatest challenge is the need for land on which affordable homes can be built. Our current plan to develop land on Twin Oaks Drive in Murfreesboro, and our Legacy Pointe 77+ home subdivision of affordable housing, will meet that goal this year! We are always also interested in acquiring land in Smyrna and LaVergne for individual home builds. Those could also possibly be multi-house subdivisions and even town houses or condominiums.
