Description
The Middle Tennessee Science and Engineering Fair (MTSEF) is the premiere STEM competition for middle and high school students in Nashville-Davidson County and its surrounding counties (Williamson, Rutherford, Wilson, Sumner, Robertson, Cheatham, Dickson, Houston, Humphreys, Montgomery, Stewart, Hickman, Lewis, Maury, Perry, Wayne, Trousdale, Bedford, Giles, Lawrence, Lincoln, Marshall, Moore). MTSEF serves as a forum for students to exhibit their scientific and engineering projects to the public. Projects are evaluated for awards in 22 scientific and engineering categories and for special awards funded by local, state, national, and international sponsors. MTSEF is an affiliate of the Society for Science and the Public and sends grand prize winners to compete at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) competition each year. Top middle school projects move on to compete in the Broadcom MASTERS (Math, Applied Science, Technology and Engineering Rising Stars), the premiere national science and engineering competition for middle school students.

CEO/Executive Director/Board Comments

A STEM-trained workforce is very important to the future of our country. At the same time, our students are increasingly lagging in subjects such as math and science. We seek to bridge this gap by fostering interest and achievement in middle and high school students. The Middle Tennessee Science and Engineering Fair Foundation aims to advance secondary school STEM education and student research and sponsor the annual Middle Tennessee Science and Engineering Fair (MTSEF), the premiere STEM competition for middle and high school students in Nashville, Davidson County and 24 surrounding counties. Our long-term goal is to achieve greater interest, participation, and preparation in STEM fields in middle and high school students in the Middle Tennessee area. Our intermediate goal is to help public schools in the served area to initiate school science fairs. We also hope to address the gender and under-represented minority inequalities in STEM by initiating early interest through the science fair.
