TAP is divided into 5 components. 1-Education: TAP is keen on education and each TAP youth must maintain a 2.8 GPA. We check report cards every quarter; if a child is maintaining his or her GPA we don't interfere. If a child is failing, TAP does one of 2 things: Depending on the subject or subjects they are having trouble in we can arrange tutoring. If for some reason a parent can't go to their child's school, TAP {with permission} will go to the child's school and try to remedy the situation. In the 23 yrs that TAP has been in existence we have never dismissed a child out because of their grades. 2-Community Service: In TAP we believe in giving back to our local communities, each TAP youth must complete 20 hours of community service during the year. TAP has several community service organizations that we partner with every year, one is the Nashville Tree Foundation, over the last 15 years we have planted well over 400 trees in the Nashville community. TAP has officially adopted Whites Creek from Tucker Road down to County Hospital Road 5 1/2 miles, TAP conducts at least 2 cleanups of Whites Creek each year. we also partner with other groups on their clean-up efforts. 3-Training: If a TAP child can't swim we teach them how. TAP can take a child from a non-swimmer to a life guard, water safety instructor, life guard instructor, scuba diver, master scuba diver, scientific diver, coral reef team leader and a diving with a purpose instructor. All of these certifications are, attainable in TAP if a youth decides to pursue them. 4-Wilderness Survival: TAP Incorporated wilderness survival training in their curriculum, September 16th 2001. The goal is to take the TAP youth and teach them basic outdoor techniques, how to set up a tent, basic fire building, compass reading, wilderness first aid etc. TAP goes to wilderness survival 4 weekends a year, after each weekend we remove some of the usual comforts so by the 4th WSC they are well equipped to survive outdoors. WSC is mandatory for each TAP youth, they must attend all 4 phases, once they have completed all 4 phases they don't have to return, but to our surprise most of the TAP youth enjoy WSC and are excited to go back. 5-Travel: There is no fun to doing all of this training and not go anywhere. So over the last 23 years TAP has been to several foreign countries Egypt, Curacao, Bahamas and to many states Texas, Virginia, Georgia, Washington D.C., and Florida. TAP has partnered with the National Association of Black SCUBA divers and sent many TAP youth to their Youth Summit {NABS/YES}. Over the last 9 years TAP has partnered with Diving With A Purpose, National Park Service and NOAA to introduce the next generation to maritime archeology and coral restoration.
