CEO/Executive Director/Board Comments

The governance of the Center is through a 14 member Board of Directors who are volunteer citizens. Seven are appointed and confirmed by the City Mayor and City Council and seven are appointed and confirmed by the County Mayor and the County Commissioners. One challenges we face are getting board members from the community, instead of center participants, to be nominated by the City and County. Educating the board members as to how the Center operates and their role as board members. The greatest challenge is to educate them in their responsibilities which is to set policy and delegate the operating procedure to the Executive Director, staff and various committees. Another challenge is to get the committees to meet to determine if things are functioning as they should or if changes need to be made and to recommend those changes for Board ratification and approval. How are we handling these challenges and opportunities? We are working with the City and County to provide more board member candidates. Each Board member is given an electronic copy of the Board Member Manual which details their duties and responsibilities. We educate them on the Center By-Laws and that they must be followed. We educate them on our Standard Operating Procedures which complement the By-Laws that also must be followed. We also encourage each committee to meet regularly and to prepare minutes of the meeting and to present to the Board. Things are really improving, and we are thankful to currently have such a wonderful caring board.
