Adult volunteers eat weekly with a student at school. This program began in 1999, serving approximately 18 children. There are now over 120 children matched with an adult mentor. Despite this growth, there are still students who do not have lunchmate mentors, therefore we continue to seek adult volunteers.

CEO/Executive Director/Board Comments

Our whole strategy is to build motivating, life-changing friendships between quality, caring adults and children in the Preston Taylor community. These friendships lead to dreaming big dreams that are inspired by God. A part of creating an opportunity for those dreams to develop is building strong achievement; we do this primarily through reading development programs led by both volunteers and professionals. However, the reading alone is not enough to create big dreams; children must also be involved in solid friendships with adults; we use lunchmate mentors, afterschool volunteers, marketplace mentors, field trip chaperones, summer program volunteers, the youth program at St. Andrews, and special events to nurture and give occasion for dreams to develop. Over 300 volunteers a week provide our children with exceptional opportunities to experience 'joy-filled friendships,' spiritual development, and achievement. With the addition of SaLT, PTM is truly able to establish a relationship with a kindergarten student and maintain multiple 'joy-filled friendships' with that student through high school. While these relationships are being nurtured with students, PTM has been able over the last few years to build better relationship with parents. Students now have an opportunity to play team sports through PTM's partnership with area sports leagues. The strengthens peer groups, access to community opportunities, relationships with parents, and instruction. A variety of community suppers, performances, our Nativity Store (help with Christmas gifts), a well-maintained building, and staff stability have strengthened the trust of the Preston Taylor community for the work of PTM.
