CEO/Executive Director/Board Comments
Greatest Opportunity Due to the fact that The Jason Foundation, Inc. (JFI) is almost 27 years in existence and now recognized as a National Leader in youth suicide awareness and prevention, JFI has established a well-respected reputation for sound clinical based programs and resources. This has enabled JFI to increase its impact both in Tennessee and nationally. Our greatest impact opportunity lies within legislation began in Tennessee in 2007 - The Jason Flatt Act. The Jason Flatt Act is a legislative initiative that works within a state's in-service and certification programs for educators to require that training in youth suicide awareness and prevention. Between 2007 to 2022, twenty-one states passed a version of The Jason Flatt Act impacting hundreds of thousands of educators and millions of students. Although the legislation does not specify any specific training program to be utilized (only approved by that state's Department of Education), The Jason Foundation in 2023 provided training for over 185,090 trainings. This opportunity to pass The Jason Flatt Act in additional states and increase our number of educators trained by JFI has become our greatest opportunity to impact suicide prevention. From our beginning, The Jason Foundation, Inc. (JFI) did not want economics or "lack of funds" by a school or youth organization to prevent any student, educator or community from receiving JFI's programs and resources. Our "no-charge" policy was easy to maintain in 1997 and the first few years when our numbers reached were in the hundreds to low thousands. However, with our numbers reaching now consistently over 4+ million each year, raising funding support that allows JFI to continue its "no-charge" policy is a growing and ever-pressing challenge. JFI has to raise support that not only allows us expansion to new schools, youth organizations and communities opportunities across the nation each year but also raise funds that will help underwrite and support current programs and resources that are part of our continuing base of "clients" such as the over 650 schools just in Tennessee that each year is updated on their materials and resources. |
