CEO/Executive Director/Board Comments
Children's Advocacy Center is incredibly conservative with its funds. All spending is carefully scrutinized by our Board of Directors. We retain the services of a certified public accounting firm to handle our all financial needs. The Treasurer for our Board of Directors closely reviews our financial state and provides the Board of Directors with a detailed copy of the financials during their monthly Board meeting. In addition to hiring an outside accounting firm to maintain our financial affairs, annually we voluntarily contract for a complete financial audit by another independent certified public accounting firm. We also have financial stakeholders who regularly review our programs for system compliance and financial due diligence. It is imperative to the betterment of child maltreatment victims that we continue to seek ways to fund our Center. The foundation of our center necessitates that our services are provided free of charge to those we serve. Therefore, we will always be dependent on governmental funding, grants and the generosity of others to sustain our programs. The 31st District is comprised of small rural communities where the majority of residents, low in minority population, are following a multi-generational practice, which is, has lived or will live within this immediate area for all or most of their lives. A large portion (88%) of our citizens has limited or no secondary education; less than 25% gainfully employed, and 20% living below the poverty level. The U.S. median household income is $53,889, based on US Census 2016 Quick Facts. The median household income within Warren and Van Buren Counties is averaged at 30% below the national average. These are among the many factors contributing to the vulnerability of our children, as well as, to the citizens in our communities being underserved. Children who live in rural areas are twice as likely to be identified as victims of child sexual abuse and the risk is tripled for children in low socioeconomic status households or where families are not gainfully employed (Sedlack, et. al., 2010). Because our district is rural and our communities lack the resources and employment opportunities that many urban areas have, the children in our area run a much higher risk of victimization. Our biggest opportunity comes from obtaining financial assistance from outside our local community, while not encroaching upon the benefactors of our sister Child Advocacy Centers. |
