CEO/Executive Director/Board Comments

The ongoing impact of the recent pandemic, along with other innate factors, has required NSF to adapt its funding models to rapidly changing circumstances. Nashville Shakespeare Festival weathered the loss of in-person programming (ticket sales and on-site donations are an important revenue stream) in 2020 and early 2021 with the help of an influx of individual and foundation support as well as federal, state, and local COVID-relief funds. In late FY21 and in FY22, a return to traditional activities (and revenues) was impacted by changes in individual giving trends and a series of unusually inclement weather events causing disproportionate outdoor-performance cancellations/low attendance. This negative impact has been tempered significantly in FY23 by further government COVID relief, allowing NSF to reduce anticipated deficits even as we implement strategies to ensure a stronger return to traditional revenue streams in the near future and as the arts sector continues to rebound and rebuild stronger audience engagement.
